Joe's Ferrari

275 series cars followed the legendary 250 series with added sophistication and performance.  3.3 liter engine (12 cylinders X 275 cc per cylinder) meant 280 horsepower in GTS form but, more importantly, featured a rear transaxle combining the transmission and differential in the back of the car meaning almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution.  The cars also featured four wheel disc brakes and a 5 speed transmission.  Contemporary accounts of all day driving in excess of 100mph were common.  The car rides well and handles very well for the standards of the time.

The serial number is 7611 and Ferrari only used odd numbers on the road cars.  This means that until this car was built, only 3800 road cars had been built in the 18 years of Ferrari production.  Compare that to 10,000 annual Ferrari car production today.  Only 200 275 GTS' were built in the three years of production meaning they were largely hand built and no two are identical.

We bought the car nearly 10 years ago from Fantasy Junction in Emeryville.  The paint was cracked and it smoked.  We had hoped that just some head work was required but the engine needed a complete rebuild, done my Sal Garcia at Waterfront Automobili in San Francisco as no one in Sacramento would work on the car at the time.  The car was mechanically gone through fixing any problems including some minor transaxle work and suspension rebuild but has not been "restored".  Brian Moore Restorations in Gold River did extensive rocker panel reconstruction as they were gone but Bondo'd over.  Brian says he has never seen a Ferrari of it's era that didn't need extensive rust repair as the factory often didn't even prime the inside of the panels.  The body work and paint were complete in 2000.

We drive the car regularly including shows but also have driven it to Monterey for Concorso Italiano several times.  Oh, the sound of that V12!
